Where Does Genius Come From?
Tracing talent to its origins probably isn’t ever going to be a precise science, but there’s a particular and pervasive brand of genetic determinism that butts its way into discussions, in scientific circles and in the media, about everything from health to intelligence to the roots of genius. According to author David Shenk, this line of argument leads us to make the wrong conclusions about human potential. —KA
Growing low-oxygen zones in oceans worry scientists ~
By Les Blumenthal, McClatchy Newspapers Les Blumenthal, Mcclatchy Newspapers – Sun Mar 7, 12:01 pm ET
WASHINGTON — Lower levels of oxygen in the Earth's oceans, particularly off the United States' Pacific Northwest coast, could be another sign of fundamental changes linked to global climate change, scientists say.
They warn that the oceans' complex undersea ecosystems and fragile food chains could be disrupted.
In some spots off Washington state and Oregon , the almost complete absence of oxygen has left piles of Dungeness crab carcasses littering the ocean floor, killed off 25-year-old sea stars, crippled colonies of sea anemones and produced mats of potentially noxious bacteria that thrive in such conditions.
Areas of hypoxia, or low oxygen, have long existed in the deep ocean. These areas — in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans — appear to be spreading, however, covering more square miles, creeping toward the surface and in some places, such as the Pacific Northwest , encroaching on the continental shelf within sight of the coastline.
Chile quake may have shifted Earth's axis ~
Chile Earthquake May Have Shortened Days on Earth
SPACE.com Space.com Staff
space.com – Tue Mar 2, 10:00 am ET
The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.
The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
"Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's axis," NASA officials said in a Monday update.
The computer model used by Gross and his colleagues to determine the effects of the Chile earthquake effect also found that it should have moved Earth's figure axis by about 3 inches (8 cm or 27 milliarcseconds).
The Earth's figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis, which it spins around once every day at a speed of about 1,000 mph (1,604 kph).
The figure axis is the axis around which the Earth's mass is balanced. It is offset from the Earth's north-south axis by about 33 feet (10 meters).
A Native Prayer for Healing Mother Earth~
I would like to share a prayer for healing Mother Earth ..and also for the people of Chile ~ The the news of the tremendous 8.8 earthquake in Chile and tsunami warning for the Pacific ...has shaken my spirit~
With peace and love ~ Coralina ~
A Native prayer for healing ~
O Great Creator,
I come before you in a humble manner
With tears in my eyes and an ancient
song from my heart, I pray.
To the four powers of Creation,
To the Grandfather Sun,
To the Grandmother Moon,
To the Mother Earth,
And to my ancestors.
I pray for my relations in Nature,
All those who walk, crawl, fly, and swim,
Seen and unseen, To the good spirits
that exist in every part of Creation.
May there be good health and healing for this Earth,
May there be Beauty above me,
May there be Beauty below me,
May there be Beauty in me,
May there be Beauty around me.
I ask that this world be filled with Peace, Love and Beauty.

Meditation exercises could boost mental toughness in soldiers readying for war, keeping them from becoming overly emotional, according to new research.
The study found that mindfulness training, which teaches people how to stay alert and in the moment without becoming emotional (giving them a kind of "mental armor"), improved the moods of U.S. Marines preparing for deployment to Iraq. Practicing mindfulness also improved a type of memory that enables people to complete complex mental tasks.

The key is practicing these mindfulness exercises daily, just as you would any other exercise, according to study co-author and University of Pennsylvania cognitive neuroscientist Amishi Jha said in a statement.
5 Things That Will Make You Happier ~
livescience.com – Mon Feb 22, 11:50 am ET
SAN DIEGO - The pursuit of happiness is sometimes easier said than done.
Some scientists have argued that happiness is largely determined by genetics, health and other factors mostly outside of our control. But recent research suggests people actually can take charge of their own happiness and boost it through certain practices.
"The billion-dollar question is, is it possible to become happier?" said psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky of the University of California, Riverside. "Despite the finding that happiness is partially genetically determined, and despite the finding that life situations have a smaller influence on our happiness than we think they do, we argue that still a large portion of happiness is in our power to change."
Lyubomirsky spoke here Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She and colleagues last year reviewed 51 studies that tested attempts to increase happiness through different types of positive thinking, and found that these practices can significantly enhance well-being. The results were published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology.

Weighing In On Bread ~
Here's an interestin' article on how to cut your calories when eatin' breads - Since me luuuuuuuuuuuv BREEAD! (lol) - i felt like sharin' this w/ D.E. ~ Yum Yumz!!
-------------------------------------
Those super-heavy, "all-natural" loaves of bread may look and sound like they're healthy, but their density signals that they probably contain more calories than most other loaves. Plus, they're typically made with simple sugars like high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, and maltose that will add even more calories.
If you're watching your weight and wondering, "Can I eat bread?"--don't despair. I'm here to tell you that you really can have your bread and eat it too without automatically putting on weight. There's a simple rule--the weight and starch connection--that will help you choose a loaf wisely.
What's the weight and starch connection?

"How to live consciously instead of on autopilot
I have met many people that are successful in their careers but admit after years of a blazing business career, an emptiness or feeling of something missing often sets in.
That drive that has served them so well in their careers now seems to have no next step or direction. Many people refer to this as burn out... The reality is that the engine hasn’t burned out—it’s stalled for lack of a meaningful direction.

In fact, NASA released a satellite photo of the blizzard from space - CHECKS IT OUT!!

The snowstorm that blanketed the East Coast this weekend was so big, it is even impressive from space. NASA’s Aqua satellite took this image centered on Washington, D.C., on Sunday with its MODIS instrument.
The blizzard shut down the federal government, stranded travelers, left hundreds of thousands without power and crushed the hopes of many retailers hoping for big sales during the weekend before Christmas.
